Downside and Hatchford Sports & Family Day is an Annual Event which has been running for over 100 years on Downside Common. This site has all the information you will need to find us and have great day out, for all the family. Sports day can only go on with sponsorship by local business, so we will be letting the sponsors have a good slice of the advertising on the whole site, After all lets face it, with out there help we will struggle to put on what we hope is a great day out for all. So no matter how large or small people's and company's help, you can find out about them here.... All the work which goes into running the sports day is done by a committee, and this years 2008 can be found by clicking on the link. Downside & Hatchford Sports Day started at the beginning of the 19th century, as a way of bringing all the Village community together for some fun and games, it originally took place on Whit Sunday, but in 1910, as a mark of respect to King Edward Vll, who died shortly before Whit Sunday (6th May 1910). The event was moved to August Bank Holiday Monday, and has remained there ever since. The event has continued annually apart from a few years where there has been no committee to run it. If you are interested in helping to organize next years event please click on the contact button and send us an e-mail, speak to a committee member on the day or speak to the Steward in Downside Sports & Social Club although he is not involved with committee, he will be able to point you in the right direction, and you don't have to be a Downside resident, as long as you are local and willing to help. It provides a day of free races from tots to OAPs!! It is sponsored by many local businesses which this year and pass has enabled us to provide free fair attractions such as bouncy castle's, the bungee run and Round-About to mention but a few. We had a large dog show and this year 2008, it was bigger and better. We had extra car parking and a free bus service from Cobham to Downside so Parking can be eased. Last year we estimated about four thousand people came along to enjoy a old style traditional day, Just like the old days. Any profit which might be made is donated to local charities or worthy causes. we all ways would like help running the day, even if you can spare just a few hours, it can make all the difference on the day! We have a small but dedicated committee, who give up there time and put in tremendous effort just to make a free day for all. |
